Abstract

901,339. Wrapping machines. FORGROVE MACHINERY CO. Ltd. Nov. 1, 1960 [Nov. 18, 1959], No. 39154/59. Class 94(1). A continuously operating twist wrapping machine includes a twisting head having pairs of grippers for holding partially wrapped articles and two pairs of twisting jaws co-operating with each pair of grippers, the gripper pairs being rotatable relative to the head. Confectionery tablets 10 are fed by a continuously rotating feed disc 11 to be lifted by one or more lifting plungers 13 into the path of lugs 15 on a conveyer chain 16. The tablets are pushed continuously along a channel 14 to a folding box 18 and are drawn into the folding box by a continuously moving web 17 of heat sealable wrapping material. The edges of the web are brought together by the folding box to form a fin extending upwardly from the top of the box. This fin is gripped by a pair of driven sealing rollers 19 which draw the fin between heated surfaces 20 to soften it so that it is sealed under the pressure of the rollers. The tube is severed into single wrapper lengths each containing a tablet by a pair of rotating cutters 21, 22 which are then fed by slightly faster moving belts 27, 28 which produce gaps 29 between them. The wrapper lengths are picked up at A by means of grippers 31 on a continuously rotating head 32. The head includes a pair of twister drums 34 mounted on opposite sides of a pocket wheel assembly 35, the wheel and the drums rotating with equal angular velocity about a common axis. Associated with each pair of grippers 31 are two pairs of twister jaws 33 each pair being mounted for continuous rotation about shafts 48 mounted on the drums 34. After a length has been picked up by the grippers 31 the latter are rotated through 90 degrees as the head moves from A to C. This presents the ends of the tube to the jaws 33 for twisting. At position B the grippers 31 release the wrapped article, finally rotating back to their initial position. All the above operations are controlled by cam means. The distance between the pairs of twister jaws can be adjusted to suit the length of the wrapper. In modifications of the machine the edges of the web are overlapped so as to form a tube without a fin, belt conveyers providing traction for the web. The co-operating belts 27, 28 may be replaced by a single perforated bottom belt which travels over a suction chamber, Fig. 2 (not shown).
