Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 13, 1920.
Application mama-ch42, 1917.- Serial m5. 154,211.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANA H. BnNgAMIN, citizen of the United States,- residing at 'Cleveland Heights, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Pressing-Machines, of which the followmg 1s a specification. I
This invention relates to pressing machines, and more particularly to what are known as sleeve stickers. Machmes of th1s kind are used for ironingand thereby st cking together the sleeves of laundried shirts, to do away with the insert on of plns and yet hold the cuffs in the desired curved flarin form. 1
he object of the invention is to provide a simple form of machine for ironing shirt sleeves, which can be readily operated; whose.
output is large as compared with prior machines for this purpose; whlch Wlll. take care of either sleeve and give a proper finish to the sleeve facing; and which embodies guiding and holding means for the sleeve so that a uniform product with a superior finish and appearance may be obtamed.
Further objects of the inventlon are 1n part obvious and in part will appear more in detail hereinafter.
The invention comprises the pressing machine hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, which represent one embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation; and Fig. 2 is a front vlew,
on a larger scale, showing a sleeve in pos1- tion to be pressed.
The machine shown in the drawlngs comprises a suitable frame having a base 1 in the form of a hollow column providedwith two spaced platforms 2 to which are rigidly secured the feet 3 of a curved upper frame member 4 whose arched upper portion 5 supports a stationary pressing or ironing member 6, preferably heated by a supply of steam or other heating medium delivered thereto by pipe 7. Base 1 is provided with suitable guides for a vertically slidable rod 8 having a suitable screw adjusting device 9 to vary its effective length. Said rod, at its up or end, supports the movable pressing mem or 10, which may also be heated by steam introduced to its inner chamber through pipe 11.
Any suitable means may be provided for reciprocating the movable pressing member to produce cooperating pressing movement between the pressing a members. As illustrated rod 8 is jointed at its lower end to the upper link 12 of a pair of toggle links, the lower link 13 of which is one arm of a bell crank lever whose other arm 14 is formed as a foot. treadle.
By pressing down on the foot treadle the lower member is elevated into pressing relation with the upper member and pressure is applied to iron a. sleeve lying between said members. When the foot treadle is released the lower pressing member drops by gravity and may be cushioned to prevent shock by springs or other devices (not shown) as will be ObVlOllS.
Either or both of the pressing members may be provided with suitable padding, and the drawings-show the upper or stationary member as having a plain metal ironing surface cooperating with the padding 15 of the lower member.
Suitable means is also provided for guiding the sleeve to be ironed to its place and for assisting the operator in holdin said sleeve whlle ironing the same. For th1s purpose a thin metal plate 16 is located at one s1de of the pressin members, said plate lymg in a vertical p ane and having a narrow slot 17 with one end open at the front of the machine, the opposite end of said slot being closed and serving as an abutment for a purpose which will appear hereinafter.
If both pressing members are movable, as they may be, said slot will be located 0 posite the'place where the pressing mem ers come together, but as one member is stationary in themachine shown the plate is so located that the slot lies parallel with the edge of the stationary pressing member and-just below its lower pressing face. Said plate may be attached to any suitable support, such as the mam frame, but is shown as rigidly connected by bolts or screws 18 to the upper pressing member.
In using the machine the operator slips the sleeve into the slot with the cuff protrudlng beyond the guide plate, as. shown in Fig. 2 until one edge of the sleeve abuts the closed end of the slot 17 which locates the sleeve in properposition to be pressed. The facing along one edge of the sleeve slit is held The sleeve is pulled or stretched lengthwise to remove wrinkles and folds, the thick plies ables all of the sleeve b of the cufi preventing it from being drawn through slot 17. The plate, however, en-
position between the ressing members and insures pressing the s eeve uniformly up to a oint close to the cuff.
referabl the machine is arranged for pressing eit er ri ht or left sleeves. As the facing strips on t e two sleeves are on oppositeedges of the sleeve slit it is therefore convenient to use two plates 16 located on opposite sides of the ressin members Y one plate for receiving t e on of one sleeve and the other plate the cuff of the other sleeve. Both plates are of course detachable from their supports to enable the padding on the pressing members to be readily applied or removed, as desired;
The machine described is of simple form and enables the sleeves to be ironed rapidly and with uniform excellence of finish and always forms and preserves the curved flare of the cuff most desired.
\Vhat I claim is 1. A sleeve sticker, comprising relatively movable pressing members having cooperaty to be pulled into,
ing pressing surfaces, and a sleeve mem er provided with a narrow slot lying guiding opposite the space between said pressing members, said slot being open at one end and closed at the other to form a sleeve locating abutment.
2. A sleeve sticker, comprising cooperating relatively movable pressing members, and sleeve gulding and supporting means having a narrow slot at one side of one of said members for a left sleeve and a narrow slot at the other side of said member for a right sleeve.
3. A sleeve sticker, comprising cooperating relatively movable i pressing members, and
sleeve guiding and supporting means hav- DANA H. BENJAMIN.
