[Class 60] A cam grinding machine comprises a rotatable grinding wheel and a work table, a rock bar, a work support including a rotatable spindle on said rock bar, means to rotate said spindle, means including a master cam on said spindle and a follower roller to impart a rocking movement to said bar towards and away from the grinding wheel to generate a predetermined contour on a cam being ground, and means to impart a secondary movement to said rock bar so as to bodily shift the cam being ground to maintain a predetermined line of contact between the grinding wheel and cam being ground throughout the grinding operation. A rock bar 43 is pivotally mounted by trunnion studs 44, 45 on a frame 38 which is pivotally mounted by trunnion studs 39, 40 on the work table 11 which is longitudinally adjustable on the machine frame 10. The cam shaft 52 is rotatably mounted between a foot centre 51 on the rock bar and a centre 49 on a spindle 46 journalled in brackets 47, 48 on the rock bar. The spindle 46 is rotated by an electric motor through belt and pulley and a telescopic shaft having universal joints at each end. The spindle 46 carries a master cam 55 which cooperates with a follower roller 56 carried by a housing 63 on the table 11. The spindle also carries an auxiliary cam 58 co-operating with a follower roller 59 adjustably carried by the housing 63, this cam causing vertical movement of the rock bar 43 so as to maintain the point of contact between the grinding wheel 20 and work in a horizontal line passing through the centre of the grinding wheel. A tension spring 67 is connected to the housing 63 and to an arm 65 on the rock bar to maintain the work in contact with the grinding wheel.
