Abstract

191,303. Lumsden, T. Feb. 14, 1922. Flat extended surfaces, surfacing.-A flat surface is ground on the work, which is supported on a table 46, by the face of a grinding-wheel 10. The wheel spindle 11 is carried by a ram 12 mounted eccentrically of a revoluble carrier 13 which is supported by a housing 14 on a slide 15 movable laterally on a bed 16. The carrier is revolved in either direction, or oscillated, by means of a worm-wheel 22 and a worm 21 driven, through gearing 24, 25, by an open belt 26, or a crossed belt 27. The spindle 11 is driven by a chain 17 engaging a sprocket wheel 33, Fig. 4, rotatably mounted on a non-rotating shaft 18, the wheel 33 having a sleeve 34 slidable within a sprocket wheel 35 and driven therefrom by a key 36; gearing other than chain-gearing may be employed. The wheel 35 is driven by a chain 19 or other gearing from an electric motor 20. In order to adjust the grinding-wheel to or from the work, the shaft 18 is moved axially by a nut 28, Fig. 4, mounted in a fixed bearing 38 and rotated through gearing and shafts 43, 44 by a hand-wheel 45. The shaft 18 is freely supported in the carrier 13 and transmits its sliding movements to the ram through a lug 32 thereon. The machine may be arranged with the grinding spindle vertical, and the work table may be fixed, rotary, or reciprocatory.
