Abstract

548,870. Grinding and polishing machines. BRYANT CHUCKING GRINDER CO. April 22, 1941, No. 5203. Convention date, April 23, 1940. [Class 60] In a grinding machine the wheel 13 is carried by a shaft 11 mounted to rotate in but not move axially relative to a sleeve 9 means being provided to rotate the shaft and traverse the sleeve. This has an enlargement 10 which serves as a piston and is acted on by fluid pressure controlled by a valve 38. Rotation of the sleeve 9 is prevented by a hood 23, to which it is connected, and a slide bar 30. The shaft 11 has a coupling 14 and is driven by a motor 22 which may however be arranged coaxial with the shaft or on top of the hood as in Fig. 6. In this modification the cylinder in which the piston 10 operates is carried by a slide 50 which can be moved axially of the shaft 11 by a fluid operated piston 59. The work is carried in a rotary holder 3 on a slide 2.
