[Class 60] [Also in Groups XXII and XXIV] In a machine for grinding crank shafts or other rotatably mounted work-pieces, means are provided for simultaneously moving the slide carrying the grinding wheel and a worksteadying rest towards or away from the work-piece. In the machine shown the operation of a valve 92 by a lever 93 admits fluid from a pump 91 either through a control valve 97 to a cylinder 100 to traverse the work table 15 or through a control valve 95 simultaneously to cylinders 107, 118 to move the slide 11 carrying the grinding wheel 20 and a slide 116 carrying a work-steadying shoe 115 towards or away from the work 32. The work 32 is clamped in opposed rotating heads 30, 31 constructed as described in Specification 351,522 and adjustably mounted on the table 15. The heads 30, 31 are rotated by chain-gearing 46, 41, an intermediate shaft 43, and a clutch 38 from a power shaft 37. The pistons 55 and cylinders 56 for operating the clamping jaws of the heads 30, 31 may be arranged in axial alignment with the work-rotating spindles instead of being offset as described in Specification 351,522. The work table and wheel slide may be operated manually by handwheels 60, 68 through suitable gearing. The slide 116 is movable by a hand-operated screw 123 relatively to its operating member 122. In order to prevent the table being traversed while the work-shoe 115 is engaging the work, operation of the valve 97 is normally prevented by the engagement of a pin 164 on its operating lever 103 with a spring-pressed lever 160 pivoted to the steady-rest frame 117. When the shoe 115 is retracted a pin 165 on the slide 116 moves the lever 160 out of engagement with the pin 164. A manually operated valve in the pipe line to the cylinder 118 allows operation of the wheel slide 11 independently of the shoe 115 to grind the rough spots off the work at the start of the grinding operation. The splash guard comprises a fixed lower member 140 and a hinged upper member 141, removal of the work being facilitated by the upper member 141 being turned to the horizontal position against the resistance of springs 144, 145 by a projection 146 on the slide 116 when the shoe 115 is retracted.
