514,022. Grinding crank pins. MAYER, C., and NOLLE, R. Aug. 29, 1938, No. 25282. [Class 60] In a machine for grinding the. crank-pins of crank-shafts, the grinding wheel operates with its flat front face, the axis of the wheel being perpendicular to that of the pin, and the crank-shaft is rotatably supported by bearing clamps with its axis vertical. The shaft 9 is guided by clamping-plates in brackets 11, 12 adjustable along a vertical column 1, and the shaft is rotated and supported by a table 3 the spindle of which is slidably keyed in a bush 4 rotated, through worm gearing, by a motor 5, the table being raised and lowered to reciprocate the shaft 9 either by a hand lever 8, linkage 7, and a lever 6, or automatically by an adjustable eccentric. On the bracket 12 is mounted a transverse slide 13 carrying the grinding wheel 16 and its driving motor 14, a measuring gauge 17 also being provided, and in the brackets 11, 12 are mounted respectively slidable bearing-clamps 18, formed at their inner ends with support surfaces 31, 32 against which the crank-pin is retained by a plate 20. In order to avoid the accentuation during grinding of small initial irregularities on the work, the surface 31 is not exactly parallel to the operative face of the grinding wheel, but makes an angle of from 2 degrees to 10 degrees therewith; the surfaces 31, 32 may be replaced by rollers. The lower end of the shaft 9 is supported on a centre 35 slidable radially in the table 3, or when single cranked shafts or shafts not having two pins in line are being treated, by a clamping member slidable on the table. A third work support 33 may be provided.
