Abstract
216,555. Wheaton, L. W. Jan. 30, 1923. Disc apparatus; gauges.-In a buffing-machine in which the work is rotated against a rotating buffing-wheel, the work is mounted on an axially reciprocable spindle, and means are provided permitting vertical movement of the spindle, horizontal movement in two directions at right-angles, rotation about a vertical axis, and tilting in a vertical plane containing the axis of the spindle; means also are provided whereby successive pieces of work mounted on the spindle may be brought to the correct buffing position without adjustment of the machine. The machine comprises a base 10 in which is adjustable vertically; by means of screw-gearing 15, 16, Fig. 6, a table 12. On the table is a horizontally slidable carriage 28 movable by a screw 29, and on the carriage 28 is an upper carriage 34 movable across the lower carriage by a screw 35. The upper carriage has thereon a post 39, Figs. 3 and 6, having a pintle 40 and a flange 41 carrying a locating-disc 42. 'Rotatably mounted on the pintle is a saddle 43 having a flange 45 resting on the disc 42 and having therein two segmental slots 50, which in conjunction with bolts 51 screwing into the disc, serve for angular adjustment of the saddle about a vertical axis. The disc 42 is located in a definite position by a spring- pressed locking-pin 52, which engages an opening 53 in the disc, and may be withdrawn therefrom, to allow the saddle to be rotated for removal &c. of the work, by a lever 59; re-engagement of the pin with the opening ensures correct positioning of a new piece of work. On the saddle is pivoted, at 63, Fig. 3, a yoke 60 adjustable about the pivot bv a slot 65 and a bolt 64. The work 66 is mounted on a chuck 67 on the spindle 68, which is carried bv the yoke. In order to allow the spindle to be reciprocated, it is rotatablv mounted at its front end in a sleeve 73 and prevented from axial motion therein by collars 76, 77, and the sleeve is slidably and non-rotatably mounted in the yoke and prevented from axial movement by bevel gears 83, 84 mounted on the sleeve. The spindle is rotated through the bevel gear 83 and a bevel gea.r 186 by a shaft 85, which is driven through a shaft 98 having universal joints 100, 101, from a shaft 87. The spindle 68 is reciprocated by an adjustable throw crank-disc 102 rotated, through gearing 104, 106, 107, by the bevel-gear 84 and the crank pin 109 is coupled to a cross-head 111 secured to the sleeve 73 by a connecting-rod having two parts 112, 115 and an interposed spring 118. The work, which is shown as a cylindrical cup, may be supported at its outer end by a head 124 rotatably mounted in a bearing 125 carried by a sleeve 126, which is pressed by a spring 130 and supported on a rod 120 adjustably carried by the cross-head 111. In order to polish tapered work, the article is mounted on a chuck 140, Fig. 11, carried by an extension 168 of the spindle 68. The extension is journaled in a yoke 142 pivoted to a bracket 141 secured to the sleeve 73, and the extension is driven by bevel gearing 144 - - 146. Circumferential spinning marks are removed from the work by adjustment of the chuck into such a position that the buffing-wheel 71 crosses the spinning marks at an angle.
