563,067. Lens &c. grinding machines. LEVER, P., and JORDAN, A. T. April 14, 1943, No. 5993. [Class 60] In a lens &c. grinding and polishing machine wherein the workpieces are mounted on a rotary wheel or drum, the wheel is reciprocated axially past stationary grinding surfaces. The machines, arranged in pairs on a bed and driven from a common shaft, comprise a spindle d, Fig. 1, carrying the wheel b with the workpieces a thereon and driven through fast and loose pulleys g<1>, g<2>. The spindle is axially reciprocated by a lever j pivoted about a vertically adjustable fulcrum p<1> and driven by a cam m. The spindle is connected to a sleeve block h. connected to trunnions i in the forked end of the lever j, the trunnions engaging slots i<1> in a yoke i<2> which surrounds and slides vertically on the sleeve block and can be lowered to engage its slots i<1> with the trunnions i, or raised to release the connection, by a hand-operated stem h<1> fitted with a retaining nib h<2>. The laps or tools c, Fig. 2, are pivoted on vertical trunnions c<1> on arms x pivoted on a pedestal e through which the spindle passes, and are pressed into working contact by adjustable springs z, stops y being provided. For grinding minus lenses, the blanks are supported on the inside of a drum 2, Fig. 8, mounted on the spindle and convex laps 3 are carried by spring-influenced arms 4 pivoted on posts 6 carried adjustably by the pedestal.
