Abstract

391,470. Grinding and polishing lenses &c. DESENBERG, J., 8, Melchiorstrasse, Cologne, Germany. Sept. 28, 1931, No. 26982. [Class 60.] Lenses &c. are ground or polished by rotating the lens and the grinding &c. tool on axes intersecting at the centre of curvature of the surface to be treated, and so arranging the relative rotational speeds, that the grinding strokes, that is, the paths traced on the lens or on the tool by a point on the tool or on the lens, take the form of straight of slightly curved lines, for example, as shown in Fig. 6. The lens blank 1 is carried by a holder 2 on a spindle 3 and the tool 11, which is in the form of a ring, is mounted on a holder 10 supported and driven by a spindle 7, the axes of the spindles intersecting at the point 0 ; a rocking motion may be imparted to the tool or to the work in addition to the rotation. The various stages of grinding and polishing may be performed by changing the tool on the spindle 7, and this changing may be effected automatically by a laterally moving transport device. In a modification, the polishing-tool is carried by a holder which fits over and encloses the tool 11.
