Abstract
562,437. Lapping machines. WALKER, N. Dec. 28, 1942, No. 18422. [Class 60] A work-piece 39 secured in a chuck 38 on a spindle 34 rotating in an arm 32 on a standard 11 is lowered by a lever 37 into contact with a rotating lap 23 mounted on a pedestal 21 on a table 20 also secured to the standard 11 and the lapping operation is effected by oscillating the arm 32 about the standard from a position in which the centres of the work-piece and lap coincide to the position in which the centre of rotation of the work-piece is substantially at the perimeter of the lap. The lap may be driven from a motor 16 secured to the standard 11 through belt and reduction gearing 26, 28 and the work-piece may be driven in the opposite direction and at a lower speed than the lap, through belt and reduction gearing 43, 45. The arm 32 is oscillated from a central position A to one or other of the positions B, C by the engagement of a crank-pin 50 on an intermediate shaft 48 of the gearing 43, 45 with a slotted arm 51 secured to the standard 11.
