[Class 60] A machine for grinding or polishing the bolsters of table knives and like articles of cutlery, of the type in which the article is mechanically rotated and presented to the action of a revolving grinding or like wheel 11 by a work-holder 30 rotatable on an axis parallel with the axis of the wheel and in which provision obtains for relative movement of the work-holder and wheel laterally of their axes through the medium of a " former " or pattern 35 rotatable in unison with the work-holder on an axis parallel therewith and with the grinding or polishing wheel, has the rotatable workholder 30 mounted on a lever 29 for oscillatory movement about the axis of a rotary shaft 23 which carries means 28, 31 for effecting rotation of the work-holder, an abutment 41 being- provided in the path of movement of the workholder and in alignment with the wheel periphery for seating engagement by the bolster of the article such that, by seating engagement therein of the bolster, the article is determinably positionable in the work-holder for rotation thereby with the axis of its bolster co-axial with the axis of rotation of the workholder and with the bolster located in alignment with the wheel periphery. The workholder 30 is rotated about its axis by a concentric pinion 31 engaged by a pinion 28 keyed to a driven shaft 23; the pinion 28 also engages a pinion 36 concentric with the cam 35 to rotate the cam. The cam 35 is engaged by a roller carried at one end of a pivoted lever 33 which is connected, by a lever 32, at its other end to the lower end of the lever 29 on which the work is carried, so that on rotation of the cam the work is swung towards and away from the shaped grinding-wheel 11. The pinion 28 automatically comes to rest at every revolution of a driving pinion 24 (not shown) on the shaft 23 which has a smooth untoothed section on its periphery. A foot-operated lever 36a can retract the work from the grinding- wheel.
