363,650. Centreless grinding. WHITE, A. E., 5, Quality Court, Chancery Lane, London.-(Cincinnati Grinders, Inc.; 3058, South Street, Cincinnati, Ohio, U.S.A.) Aug. 22, 1930, No.25183. Addition to 357,188. [Class 60.] Trueing rotating tools.-A centreless grinding machine for grinding castors or other articles not suitable for grinding by the through-grinding process, comprises a carrier which moves a succession of the articles through the grinding throat in a direction perpendicular to their axes. The machine comprises a bed 10 carrying a grinding- wheel 12 and, on a slideway 13, a slide 14 movable by a screw 15 and a wheel 16. On the slide is a housing 17 carrying the regulating-wheel and the work carrier, the regulating-wheel consisting of an abrasive ring 29 carried by a cylinder 27 secured on a shaft 20 journalled in a frame 18 secured to the housing 17. Adjustably secured to the frame 18 by bolts 80 and slots is a plate 36 to which is secured a casing 38, and in the casing is journalled the hub 40 of the work-carrier 41, which is driven by a spindle 42 operated, through worm gearing 43, 47, a belt 52, and speed-transmission gearing 53 from a motor 54. The carrier 41 has ribs 44 projecting therefrom to form, with a closer plate 58, pockets, open at the outer and inner peripheries of the carrier, to receive the work 56; tapering grooves 59 are provided in the members 41, 58 to receive hub portions 57 on the work pieces. The carrier surrounds the regulating- wheel and is so adjusted that where it lies in the grinding-throat it approaches the regulating-wheel more closely than at other points, and work-pieces, delivered from a magazine 61 to the pockets, contact first with the regulating-wheel and then, as they pass through the throat, with the grinding- wheel. In a modification the carrier is rotated intermittently by ratchet gearing. A support 22 is provided having ways 23 for a device 24, 25, 26 for trueing the regulating-wheel.
