549,071. Grinding-machines. STOPPARD, T. Dec. 12, 1941, No. 16080. [Class 60] In a surface grinding-machine or the type in which the grinding wheel e is mounted horizontally in bearings in a head a adjustable in or on a vertical column c located to one side of a work-carrying slide f which is traversed in the plane of the grinding wheel; in order to enable the grinding wheel to operate upon the full width of the workpiece the vertical column c is arranged so that it is moved transversely to the direction of travel of the slide f, the grinding wheel spindle b having no axial movement for this purpose. The slide base h carrying the column c is extended beneath the work table f so that it comes beneath the grinding wheel e to give a rigid support for the spindle b. The work slide f, the slide h and the head a are operated respectively by hand wheels g, k, m. Alternatively they may be power operated. The spindle b is driven from the motor n by a belt passing over an upper pulley carried on the column c.
