Abstract

1,043,240. Grinding. A. A. JONES & SHIPMAN Ltd., and J. HOULDSWORTH. Jan. 29, 1964 [Dec. 22, 1962], No. 48535/62. Heading B3D. A horizontal spindle surface grinding machine comprises a carriage 21 which supports a grinding wheel head 23 and is supported for crossfeed sliding movement by two slideways 20 located at opposite sides of the carriage in a bridge member 18 bridging upright structures 5, 6, 7 arranged at opposite sides of the carriage, the bridge member being adjustable vertically on the structures for applying a rough downward positioning movement of the grinding wheel G, and the wheelhead being pivotally mounted upon the carriage for a fine downward feed movement of the grinding wheel. The machine has a work-table 2 which is reciprocatable on a bed 1 secured to a base 3, 4, part 3 of which carries support structures 5, 6 on one side of the carriage and part 4 of which carries the support structure 3 on the other side of the carriage; the structures are braced by a cover 9 and strut 8. The bridge member 18 is secured to a saddle 10, which is mounted for vertical sliding movement on the structures 5, 6, and has an extension 19 having a roller which rests on a saddle 15 which is also mounted for vertical sliding movement on the structure 7, the movement being effected by screws 11, 12, 16 driven from a motor 17; the roller allows for slight inaccuracies in the movements of the saddles 10 and 15. The under surface of the bridge member is formed with the slideways 20 along which the carriage is moved to effect cross-feed of the grinding wheel. The grinding wheel is mounted on a spindle 23 which is driven by an electric motor M and supported in a sleeve 22, the wheelhead being formed with spaced arms 24 received within lugs 25 on the carriage, a rod 26 passing through bores in the lugs and arms. A screw jack 27, which may be operated by manual or power means, is provided to adjust the wheelhead about the rod to effect a fine feed of the grinding wheel. One of the screws 11, 12 operating the saddle 10 is independently adjustable to effect levelling of the bridge member 18, a level indicator 28 being provided on the saddle. A further level indicator 29 is provided on the base of the machine.
