Apparatus for forming the profile of a grinding wheel 15 on a horizontal spindle of a surface grinding machine comprises a carriage 21 adjustable by screw-threaded means, 30, 31, 32 on a base 17, and a pantograph mechanism 50 ... 53 which has a tracer member 58 mounted on one side of a fixed pivot 54 on the carriage for cooperation with a template 39 adapted to be supported on the carriage and a follower member 59 mounted on the opposite side of the fixed pivot and serving to support a tool 61, the follower member depending below the base to permit the apparatus to be mounted above the spindle of the grinding machine with the tracer and follower members on opposite sides of the spindle. The base 17 may be mounted on a bracket on-the machine column or on the bearing box 13 for the spindle and has guideways provided with rectilinear antifriction bearings for the carriage 21 which is movable thereby in a direction transverse to the axis of the grinding wheel by rotation of a handwheel-controlled screw 30 engaging a wheel 31 formed as a nut on the second screw 32 axially secured to the carriage ; a fibre plunger moved by a screw 28 provides a light clamping pressure to prevent vibratory movement of the carriage. The carriage has at one end a platform 36 on which the template 39 is clamped by screws 40 and adjusted by a screw 38. The tracer 58 is carried in a bearing housing 56 which is supported by an arm 52 forming one member of the pantograph 50 ... 53 movable about the pivot 54 fixed to the carriage ; one or both of links 51, 53 may be mounted on the pivot 54. The follower member, in the form of a rotatable arm 59, depends from the pantograph and carries the diamond tool 61 with its point coincident with the axis of rotation of the arm and in the horizontal plane containing the axis of the grinding wheel. Links 62, 64 and a bell-crank lever 63 connect the arm to the tracer member 58 so that rotational movements necessary to keep the tracer normal to the contour 41 of the template are imparted to the tool 61 to keep it normal to the surface of the grinding wheel. A hollow water jacket 19 may be interposed between the base 17 and bearing box 13 to prevent transfer of heat from the latter to the apparatus ; the jacket has a' guideway 18 in which the base is adjustably secured.
