Abstract

1,080,620. Grinding and polishing lenses. WILHELM LOH K.G. OPTIKMASCHINENFABRIK. July 22, 1966 [July 24, 1965], No. 33158/66. Heading B3D. A machine for grinding and polishing lenses comprises a carrier for a lens 1 adjustably mounted in a fixed frame 12, a spindle 4 carrying a tool 2 supported for rotation in a carrier 5, swivel rods 6, 6<SP>1</SP> mounting the spindle carrier for movement with and axially of the rods, mounting columns 10, 10<SP>1</SP> connected to a yoke 11 for simultaneous axial movement relative to the frame and supporting the swivel rods for movement relative thereto about a common axis 36, and means 16, 18 for locating the spindle carrier in a predetermined position relative to the frame during axial movement of the columns relative to the frame to effect adjustment of the location of the columns relative to the lens carrier. The spindle 4 of the tool 2 is driven by an electric motor 3 and is mounted in the carrier 5 which is adjustable along the swivel rods 6, 6<SP>1</SP> and is clampable thereon by screws 7. The rods are supported by pins 8, 8<SP>1</SP> in bearings 9, 9<SP>1</SP> at the upper ends of columns 10, 10<SP>1</SP> adjustably clamped by screws 14 in sleeves 13, 13<SP>1</SP> secured to the frame 12. The lower ends of the columns are joined to a yoke 11 having a rod 15 connected to a screw or hydraulic device for raising or lowering the columns. The columns are also interconnected by a freely rotatable spindle 25 carrying a lever (24, Fig. 2) connected by a pivot (23) to the lower end of a push rod (19), the upper end of which is pivotally connected to a lever (21) secured to the end piece 22<SP>1</SP> of the swivel rod 61. A sleeve (26) can be clamped by a screw (28) to the push rod and has a pin (32) joined by a connecting rod 33 to an hydraulic motor or an eccentric or crank (34) to effect rocking of the swivel rods 6, 6<SP>1</SP> about the axis 36, the extent of rocking being adjustable. The lens, which may be formed with a convex or concave surface, is mounted on the rotatable lens carrier, and to adjust the position of the centre KP of the sphere to be formed on the surface, locating pins 16, 16<SP>1</SP> mounted in the frame are engaged with recesses 18, 18<SP>1</SP> in the spindle carrier 5 and the clamping screws 7, 14, 28 are released to permit the rod 15 to displace the columns 10, 10<SP>1</SP> to a position determined by a stop member 40 disposed between a reference surface 42 and dial gauge 41. Thereafter, the screws 7, 14, 28 are tightened and the locating pins retracted so that the rotation of the crank (34) effects rocking of the swivel rods 6, 6<SP>1</SP> while the workpiece is rotated and the tool is rotated at a high speed. The tool may consist of diamonds in a sintered coating for effecting rough grinding, a lap for effecting finish grinding, both tools being cup-shaped or for finish lapping and polishing, in which polishing material is fed in water, the tool is form fitting.
