Abstract

1286448 Taper turning; grinding A A JONES & SHIPMAN Ltd and J HOULDSWORTH 19 April 1971 [13 Feb 1970] 7002/70 Headings B3D and B3T In a machine tool, e.g. a lathe or grinding machine, in which the workpiece is mounted between supports, at least one of the supports includes a support member 5 which carries an eccentric centre 1 the support member 5 being turnable about its axis to provide fine adjustment of the lateral position of the centre, e.g. for machining tapered work. The tailstock T of grinding machine supports an axially-slidable spring-loaded spindle 5, which, at its forward end carries an eccentric centre 1. An arm 11 extends laterally from the spindle 5 and carries a roller 12 which is engaged in an elongated slot 13 in a vertically adjustable shoe 14. Vertical adjustment of the shoe is made by rotation of a screw 17, graduated scales 18, 19 being provided to indicate the position of the centre 1. The slot 13 extends parallel to the spindle 5 so that axial movement of the latter can take place without affecting the lateral position of the centre. Axial movement of the spindle 5 is effected by manual adjustment of a two-part lever 10a, 9 pivoted at 10, the lever 9 having at its end a roller 8 which engages a slot 5a in the spindle 5. The slot 5a is arranged so that axial movement is unimpaired whatever the angular position of the spindle. The tailstock, as described, is mounted together with a motor-driven headstock on a swivel table itself mounted on a linear slide adapted to traverse the workpiece past a grinding-wheel (Fig. 1, not shown).
