A lathe adapted for boring, milling, &c., comprises a base plate 1, a fixed bed 2 on the plate 1, a pivoted bed 3 having a pivot pin 4 adapted to be inserted in the plate, and a saddle 8, the top surface of parts 2, 3 being at the same level. A headstock 5 supporting a motor (not shown) for driving its spindle 7 is movable along the part 3 by a screw 6. A tailstock 11 is provided, and a screw 10 for traversing the saddle, which supports a cross-slide 9. For taper turning work (Fig. 4, not shown), held in a chuck on the spindle 7, the headstock is swivelled to the angle of taper (Fig. 3, not shown), and the tool traversed by movement of the saddle. The end of the work may be faced by feeding the slide. A parallel portion may be turned by traversing the headstock. To adapt the lathe for vertical turning, the headstock is attached to a vertical web 13 on the plate 1, Fig. 5, and used as a driving-unit for a turntable 28, which replaces the bed 3. A stub shaft on the table drivingly engages a hollow shaft 16 which formed the bearing for pin 4, and carries a pulley 15 connected by a belt 32 to a shaft 17. A shaft 18 is coupled, by gears 29, 30, to shaft 17, and the headstock positioned to drive either shaft, through a slotted and screw-threaded sleeve engaging pins on the shaft, depending on the direction of rotation desired for the table. An attachment 21, 22, 24 is mounted on the crossslide, and the bed 3, adapted to support a tool 27, is mounted by its pin 4 in an opening 25 in the adjustable block 24. Boring and milling.-For this use the pin 4 of the bed 3 supporting the headstock is clamped in the opening 25 of the attachment, which is mounted (not shown) by its end 23, in an opening 12 in the plate 1. The tool is carried by the spindle 7, and the work mounted on the slide 9. Milling gears.-A support for the blank 35, Fig. 6, and an index plate 34 replace the turntable 28, Fig. 5, in the shaft 16, and the headstock 5 replaces the tool mounting on the bed 3. The top part of the headstock is pivoted through 90 degrees to bring the spindle 7 into the horizontal plane, but the bed 3 may be inclined to the vertical, offsetting the cutter 38 for use in milling helical gears. A handle (Fig. 7, not shown), rotates the shafts 17, 18 for indexing the blank.
