[Classes 60 and 145 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] A light universal bench lathe has a bed formed by two parallel rods 7 which have one end undetachably pressed into the foot of a fixed headstock 1 constructed as a closed box symmetrical about its vertical central axis 5 without lubricating points or other projecting parts and into which are fitted anti-friction bearings 3; a bed carrier 9 supports the other end of the bars in such a way that a tailstock 10 having a locking device adapted to the shape of the lathe bed and that of the carrier can transverse the entire length of the bed. Felt packed closing discs 4 secure the bearings in the headstock. An adjustable base-plate is provided having upper and lower portions 12 of the same shape and size which can be rigidly clamped to the bed by a nut 22 and a bolt 21 housed in a bush pivotally supporting a holder for the selective attachment of a hand tool rest, planing table or a ball-turning device. For planing wood a cutter head may be rotatably supported between the tailstock and the headstock with which it is in threaded driving engagement. Tool sharpening is facilitated by a grinding disc mounted on a mandrel which which can be chucked concentrically in the rear end of a collet chuck 14, or directly in a hollow spindle 15 by means of a clamping device. The lathe is designed to accommodate a lead screw and a gear train for screw cutting and is manufactured in a light metal.
