Abstract

655,292. Lathes ; drilling-machines. GATES, P., and FROST, C. E. J. Nov. 29, 1948, No. 30965. [Class 83 (iii)] A convertible multi-purpose machine for turning, drilling and other operations, comprises a headstock and a tailstock mounted on a bed to form a unit, and supporting means adapted to locate the unit either with the whole of the bed horizontally or vertically disposed, a part of which supporting means comprises a supporting surface and socket which together form the sole means for holding said unit with the bed vertically disposed. The headstock 15 and tailstock 18 are secured to a tubular bed member 16 and these members can be moved as a unit to convert the machine from a lathe to a drilling machine. A clamping screw 25 is released to free a stub-shaft 26 integral with the headstock, and a clamping screw 29 is unscrewed to release the tubular bed from a tail bracket 28. The unit is then up-ended and the tubular bed extension at the tailstock end is inserted in the clamping member 22 previously occupied by the stub-shaft 26. This clamping member is oscillatable about a pivot 23 in a foot member 11. The stub-shaft is used in the drilling position, Fig. 4, to take a pulley 38 for the belt drive. A plate 58 secured to the tailstock spindle 51 supports the work for drilling and the feed therefor is derived from the movement of the tailstock spindle by a hand lever 55 pivoted at 57. A saddle 19 for a tool-rest slides along the tubular bed 16 and is provided with downward extensions 41 which straddle a guide-bar 47 to maintain the saddle in a vertical position. The tailstock 18 is similarly guided and set screws 43 are provided to adjust for wear on the guide-bar. The saddle may be fed by hand by rotating a feed screw 45 which engages a nut 48 on the saddle. The rear end of the spindle 35 may carry a sanding disc, circular saw or polishing disc and operates in conjunction with a work rest 33 secured to the end of the tubular bed. A fretsaw may be arranged on the saddle and driven by the spindle as described in Specification 655,293.
