[Class 83 (iii)] A machine for centring cylindrical workpieces p comprises a non-rotary drill holder 33, means for lowering the holder along its vertical axis against a return spring 40, a support 11 for the work-piece having conical internal and external faces and its axis aligned with that of the drill 34, a transversely-movable V-piece 24 intersecting the said axis in order to locate the work-piece, and a rotary seat 10 shaped internally to correspond with the external form of the support 11, the latter being urged away from the seat by a spring 18. A carriage 3, which can be adjusted vertically on a column 1 by a rack 6 and pinion 5, is adapted to carry the support 11, seat 10 and a motor 17 adapted to drive a shaft 9 on the seat 10 through a belt 14 and pulleys 12, 13, 15, 16. The spring 18 is housed in the shaft 9 and, when no work-piece engages the support 11, urges the support against a stop 21 'on the carriage. The V- piece 24 is mounted in a slideway 22 carried by the column. 1 and is adjusted by a screw 25 against graduations on the slide. The head 26 of the screw is pressed by a spring 28 into contact with a sleeve 22a attached to the slide ; a screw 29 is provided in a base 23 of the slide 22 to lock the V-piece in an adjusted position. The drill holder 33 is mounted in an arm carried from the top of the column, and is adapted to be fed downwardly towards the work-piece p against the action of the spring 40 by a link mechanism 36, 37 operated by a handle 39. With the work-piece p located in position between the support 11 and drill 34 by the V- piece 24, the spring 18 is compressed to allow the support frictionally to engage, and be driven by the rotating seat 10.
