Abstract
569,539. Lathes ; tube flangers ; cutters. PARKER, A. LA R. Oct. 14, 1943, No. 16850. [Classes 83 (iii) and 83 (iv)] The tool spindle 19 of a machine tool for end facing, flanging and beading tubular articles, has a rib- and-slot connection 36, 37 with a driving spindle 14 and passes through a fixed housing. 25 in which is pivotally mounted a non-rotatable hollow member 38, the upper wall 39 of which forms a cam surface cooperating with a roller 44 mounted on the tool spindle to effect a longitudinal movement of the spindle as it rotates. The cam comprises a ball bearing assembly attached to the spindle by a screw 43 and pressed into engagement with the cam surface by a spring 33. The hollow member 38 has at one side a rack 45 engaging a worm 46 operable by a knob 48 to adjust the angular position of the member which may be clamped by means of a nut on a lubricating tube 49 passing through a slot in the housing 25, which is carried by the lower end of the driving spindle sleeve 15. A pinion 17 engaging a rack 16 on the sleeve may be operated by hand levers 18 or by a foot treadle through a lever 75 a,nd rack 76 to raise or lower the driving spindle. In the form shown, the spindle is vertical and the machine comprises a column 10 supporting a work table 11 and a housing 12 within which a belt 12 carries the drive from a. motor 13 to the spindle 14. The machine is intended more particularly for shaping the ends of tubular articles, which, if flanged at the lower end 57, may be held in a block 52 having a recess 54 (not shown) and clamped by an arm 58 having a co-operating recess 59. A cutting tool 60 may be clamped within the lower end of a bit 21 bv means of semicircular plates 62a, the lower ends of which enter the tubular member and serve as a centring device. By using different tools the upper end of the tubular member may be formed with an inclined bead or with an inclined outwardly-flared edge.
