\ I x WVE /TQ/ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM R. ORMES,
OF WALTHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
Application filed April 16,
To all whom itmag concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. OnMns,of lValtham, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and Improved Combined Punch and Countersinking Machine, of which the following is a specification.
The punching and finishing of a screw hole in a metal plate is usually the result of two operations performed by two machines, viz: a press-carrying 'punch by which the hole is first made, and second, the cutting of a countersink to receive the head of a screw, this being done upon a separate machine.
My present invention relates to a combination machine whereby both of these operations may be performed without removing the work.
My invention will be understood by reference to the drawings, in which- Figure 1 is'a side view, and
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line 2--2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 being a side elevation of the working mechanism in punching position, and
Fig. 4c a vertical sectional View of the same taken during the countersinking operation.
The preferred embodiment of my invention is shown in the drawings mounted on a press of ordinary charactera type of machine so well known that its further description is unnecessary except to say that it comprises a bed A and a verticallymovable head B. On the bed A is mounted a table C carrying a suitable die 0 of usual character. C is a separator attached to the table 0 at its rear end, 0 its front end forming an overhang.
To the part C of the separator are pivoted as at 0 two arms or channel irons C which are connected at their outer or free ends by an angular crossbar c and are held down by springs C attached at their rear ends to the part 0 The crossbar serves as a clamp to hold the work D against the table C.
As the punch is lifted out of the work the work will be heldby the overhang and it and the clamp will prevent the work from rising with the punch a material distance.
The head B is provided with a socket in which is set the shank E, which is held in place by a screw 6 and carries a spindle E this mechanism being of usual construction,
Specification of Letters Patent.

6 being the punch attached to the spindle in the usual way. Around the spindle E is a sleeve F a portion of which is shaped to form a pulley F. Its lower end is shaped to form a tool holder in whichis set the countersink 7 which is of usual construction except that it has a passage through it so that it may be centered by, and rotate about, the punch 6 The pulley F is operated by a belt F passing around pulleys F mounted on an axis in supports F on the table C. Above the pulley the countersink holder is grooved as at g and in the groove is a ring G which is pivotally mounted as at h in a strap lever H pivoted as at h to hangers h carried on the under side of the press B, this construction being such that the countersink holder and countersink will be freely rotated in the ring G about the tool holder E as an axis, and the ring and countersink holder may be moved vertically with relation to the spindle on which it turns, by pressing down or raising the free end of the strap lever H.
In the operation of my device the strap lever H being in its upper position as shown in Fig. 3, the press is brought down so that the punch drives its hole through the metal.
which in Figs. 3 and 4 is shown as a flat plate D In Fig. 1 the work is shown as a corrugated plate such as is used as a foundation plate for a safety tread so called. The operator then depresses the outer end (not shown) of the strap lever H so as to bring the countersink down into contact with the plate. It will be noted that the countersink is rotating all this time and when depressed it trims the opening which the punch has made in the plate and forms a countersink therein of any required depth. When its work is finished the operator lifts the countersink holder and releases the head so that both tools are raised out of contact with the work, the clamp and overhang, if it be used stripping the work off from the punch, and the clamp is raised, so that the plate D or D may be moved the requisite distance for the next hole, when the operation is repeated of first punching a new hole and. then countersinking it.
It is evident that my invention may be otherwise embodied, for as far as I know there has been no machine in which these two operations are carried on consecutively and without removal of the work. Other tools may besubstituted for the punch'and countersink if desired as I do not mean to limit my invention to the tools named.
What ll'iclaim -as my invention is-:-
1. In a machine ofthe kind des'cribed, a verticallyrecipro'ca'ting Head, a punch mounted therein, a countersink mounted" concentric with said punch to be reciprocated independently thereof, and means for rotating said countersink.
2. Ina machine of the. kind described, a verticallyreciprocating head, a punch mounted. therein, a countersink mounted concentric-with said: punch. to be recipr'o cated therewith and also independently thereof, and 'means for countersink about said punch.
3. In a machine of. the kind described, vertically,-'reciprocating head carrying aspindle, a punch, mounted in said spindle,
a sleeve. mountedconcentric with said spindle, means for rotating said sleeve, means for moving said sleeve longitudinally with relation to saidspindle. comprising a lever, and:a rotary tool-located'in the endof said sleeve.
4;. In, a machine of tliekind described, a
rotating. said vertically-reciprocating head carrying a spindle, a punch mounted in said spindle, a
sleeve mounted concentric with said spindle,
ring withim which it may be rotated, said.
ring being connected to said lever, and a rotary 'tbollocatedin said sleeve. 7
5. In a machineof the kind described, a
or verticallyreciprocating head, a. punch mounted therein, a countersink mounted concentric with said punch. to. be reciprocatedtherewith and independently thereof, andfmeans for rotating; said countersink about said. punch,, said punch" serving as a bearing for said countersink. V
6. In a machine. of the kind described, a' vertically-reciprocating head. carrying a tool liolder,.ia second tool hol der-.-mounted concentrically with. said first toolfliolder to be reciprocatfed therewith andlreciprocated and rotatedi independently thereof, and means for, reciprocating and rotatinghit.
