Abstract

558,215. Milling. STEELS, R. E. July 20, 1942, No. 10086. [Class 83 (iii)] A cutter spindle mounting for a milling, drilling, engraving or like machine-tool comprises a spindle 11 holding a cutter 12 and mounted in ball bearings 28 in a non-rotary quill 15 which is normally urged inwards towards a feed cam 23 by springs 20 secured to pins 21 on the quill and to pins 22 on a housing 16 which may be formed with a gibbed slideway 17 for mounting on a pantograph arm &c. A ball 26 is interposed between the feed cam 23, which is carried on a spindle manually operated by a knob or lever, and a depression in the head 15a of the quill. The spindle is driven by pulleys 13, 14. The lower part of the housing, which is of cylindrical form, is screwed to receive nuts 33, 34 which retain an enclosing-assembly consisting of upper and lower collars 30, 32 and a sleeve 31.
