Abstract

842,167. Boring and turning. COMMONWEALTH SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH ORGANIZATION. June 24, 1957 [June 25, 1956], No. 19883/57. Class 83 (3). Apparatus for improving the accuracy and surface-finish of cylindrical surfaces, such as brass bars for the manufacture of diffraction gratings, comprises a tool-holder associated with at least three bearing-pads equally spaced about the circumference of the work, and a cutting- tool rigidly secured to the tool-holder, the latter being mounted in a lathe &c., so that the tool is fed with freedom of movement of the toolholder relative to the machine frame in at least two directions. A diamond-tipped tool 5, Fig. 4, has a micrometer adjustment on the base 1 of a tool-holder and projects through a centririgmember 2, 3, also secured to the base. The centring-member is clamped around a cylindrical workpiece 10 held between centres 11, 12, Fig. 3, in a lathe 9. The base of the holder is supported against rotation by a ball-race 14, Fig. 4, carried by the saddle, and a further ball-race 13, Fig. 3, bears against the side of the centring-member so that the tool-rest is fed along the work when the normal saddle feed is engaged. The centring-member is provided with " Michell " bearing-pads 4 lined with " Neoprene " or like material, and lubricant is supplied through pipes 15, 16. A wiper 7, Fig. 4, is arranged below the tool tip, and is of soft material to remove cuttings and prevent scoring of the work. A boring-bar, adapted to be supported in a similar manner by bearing- pads within the work, is described.
