Abstract

811,078. Attachments for turning. DAVIDSON, D. Dec. 11, 1956 [Feb. 20, 1956], No. 37785/56. Class 83 (3). In a lathe attachment for cutting oil grooves in shafts, bearings, &c., an oblique cam rotating concentrically with the work-holder reciprocates a tool axially to cut the grooves. The work 1, Fig. 1, is held in a chuck 3 to which the oblique cam 91 is attached by adjustable spacers 14, and the tool 5 is mounted on a slide 6 carrying a follower 16a whose ball-end 16 engages the groove 13 between the plates 9, 10 of the cam. In a modification, the cam 24, Fig. 3, is secured by a bolt 23 inside the chuck 3 holding the work 1, and has an oblique groove 13 engaging the follower on a shank 16a carrying the tool 5. The cam is formed in two parts 19, 21 and a spacer 20, and is clamped by bolts 22 and may be made by cutting the parts from a tube. The cam may be situated in a bore of the work.
