Abstract

[Class 60] [Also in Group XXII] A co-ordinate drilling-machine having optically-read longitudinal scales for determining the positions of the slides is provided with an attachment whose position is determined by the scales and which carries a tool spindle rotatable about an axis extending in the direction of one of the slides so that slots may be cut in the work at accurately spaced distances and with relation to holes drilled in the work at the same setting. The tool may be a milling-cutter, grinding disc or other tool. In one form a bracket 12 is vertically slidable on guides 11 on the pillar 1 of a drilling machine and carries a vertical pivot 17 for an arm 16 which carries the cutter disc 20. Vertical adjustment of the bracket and arm is effected by a screw 14 operated from a hand wheel 13, a scale and microscope being provided for indicating the adjustment and clamping being effected by handles 15. The - arm may be swung about the pivot 17 to bring it to inoperative position, and in the operative position shown a releasable bolt 28 in the arm engages a T-slot 25 in the pillar and may be clamped by a hand nut 27. The cutter spindle 19 is carried by a slide 18 axially adjustable by means of a hand screw 23 and is driven by an electric motor 21 on the slide. The work is mounted on a table 8 which may be traversed on a saddle 9, scales and microscopes m<1>, m<2> being provided for indicating the mutually perpendicular adjustments. The arm 16 may be fed vertically by the screw 14 for effecting short slots in the work whilst for longer slots the feed of the table 8 or saddle 9 is used, the spindle 19 being arranged at 90‹ to the position shown in the former case. The slide 18 may be arranged as horizontal arcuate guide on the arm 16 so that the plane of the cutter may be adjusted vertically about a vertical axis. In a modified form a bracket 29, Fig. 3, carrying the cutter spindle 19 is keyed at 37 to the 'quill 4 of the drill head 2 with the cutter in the plane of movement of one of the work slides and is clamped thereon by means of a hand-operated nut and bolt 35 and segmented spring pads bearing on the quill. A shoulder 29b on the bracket locates it axially so that a bevel, gear 38 on the cutter spindle may be driven from a similar gear on the drill spindle 3. For angular adjustment of the bracket around the quill the key 37 may be removed. In another form a bracket similar to 29 is bolted to the drill head 2 and has an annular recess engaging a spigot on the quill for locating the bevel drive from the spindle. Feed is then applied to the cutter by vertical movement of the drill head, in machines which are not provided with a quill. The cutter spindle may be driven from the drill spindle through worm or other gearing in order to displace the plane of the cutter from the axis of the drill spindle. The device may be used for cutting parallel slots in work at distances apart which are accurately measured by the scales and microscopes and also for drilling holes at the same setting of the work on the table, and may also be used for cutting racks and for finishing the teeth thereof by means of a profiled grinding disc. The invention may be applied to drilling machines of the planer type.
