Abstract
215,811. Wilhelm, J. H. Jan. 16, 1923. Combined turning, drilling, and milling machines.-In a combination metal-cutting machine for turning, milling, boring and drilling, of the type comprising a lathe bed or machine table and an angular..y adjustable tool-holder carrying a rotating spindle and adjustable relatively to the lathe bed &c., the tool-holder is slidably mounted on a segmental guide above the lathe bed. The base L, Fig. 1, carries a cylindrical column 1 upon which slides a sleeve 2 carrying a lathe bed G which is vertically adjusted by a screw 5 operated from a hand-wheel 3 and is clamped by a handle 27. The outer end of the lathe bed may be steadied by being clamped at 41 to a guideway 21 on a standard 18 adjustably clamped to a slotted table 24 on the base L. A centre 20 is carried by the standard. Large work pieces may be mounted on the table 24, the lathe bed being swung aside about the column 1 and the standard 18 being removed. The upper end of the column carries the segmental guide 7 which supports the tool-holder H whose spindle is driven through a belt 12, Fig. 4, from a motor 9 mounted on a rearwardly extending bracket 11 so as approximately to balance the weight of the tool-holder and prevent binding of the guide 7. Speed-changing mechanism 15, Fig. 1, controlled by a handle 16 may be provided for the tool-spindle which may be fed axially from a hand wheel 17. To facilitate the sliding of the tool-holder along the guide 7 a balance device is provided comprising a system of weights 31, 33, Fig. 3, resting on ledges within the column 1 while a cable 35 secured to a fixed point 36 and to the tool-holder at 40 carries a weight 34 and passes over pulleys 38, 39. The arrangement is such that as the tool-holder descends the guide 7 the weights 31, 33 are successively lifted by the rising weight 34 so that the variable vertical component of the weight of the tool-holder and motor is approximately balanced in all positions. In a modification, Fig. 5, the machine is provided with a fixed lathe bed, while a column 43 carrying the segmental guide and a column 45 carrying the back centre 44 are simultaneously adjustable vertically through screw and bevel gearing operated from a hand wheel 47. The tool-holder H may be traversed by worm and rack gearing operated from a handle 58. In a further modification, a milling-machine table and work-holder of ordinary construction are substituted for the lathe bed.
