A drilling, milling, slotting, grinding, filing, boring, turning and screw-cutting machine tool comprises a horizontal bed a, a vertical tool spindle h situated intermediate the ends of the bed with means including a power-operable crank mechanism o for moving it vertically, a horizontal work spindle 4 at one end of the bed, with means 5 for adjusting it vertically, and movable means b on the bed for supporting the work or a toolholder. The saddle b is traversed by rack-andpinion means c, or by a screw d. It bears a crossslide e carrying a work-table e' the edges of which are additionally supported on the saddle by guides e<SP>2</SP>. The tool-slide g is moved on the fixed column f by rotation of a handle s and gearing q associated with a nut j. The screw i can also be reciprocated by a shaft 14 and the crank o by appropriate setting of a clutch 30. With the clutch reversed, the tool spindle h is rotated by the shafts 14, v and chain gearing u. The spindle 4 is also rotated by chain gearing from the shaft 14 and the work-slide 3 is adjusted by the screw 5 and locked by bolts 8. The shaft 14 may be rotated at any one of eight speeds through a quadruple belt pulley and a manually operable clutch. The table e<SP>1</SP> may be replaced by a compound slide. The screw d may be rotated by the shaft 14. The slide g may carry tool-holders as described in Specification 636,783. A vertically adjustable tailstock 39 is mounted on an adjustable bracket 38. The Provisional Specification states that a grinding wheel driven by a flexible shaft may be mounted on the slide g or the table e'.
