[Class 60] A die ripping and polishing machine comprises a fixed chuck 1 on a stationary headstock 2, a reciprocable non-rotatable collet 3 mounted on an adustable carriage 4, a driven carrier disc 7, which carries a movably-mounted presser element 12 and has a central opening 10 for the passage of the lap spindle 5, and means for moving the element into contact with the lap spindle. The means consists of a screw 18 against which the element is held by a spring 17, the element being adapted for adjustment about a pivot 14. The lap spindle 5 carries the lap, which is in contact with the aperture of the die held by the chuck, and a sleeve 6 for engagement with a ball 13 fitted in the element 12. A pulley 30 slidably keyed to a shaft in the base of the machine drives the disc 7 by means of a belt either directly or through intermediate reduction pulleys. This assembly is mounted on a carriage 22 which also carries the disc 7 and is adjustable along guide rods 24. The latter also support the adjustable carriage 4 which contains an eccentric driven from the shaft carrying the pulley 30 to reciprocate the lap spindle 5, the shaft being driven by reduction gearing from an electric motor. To facilitate examination of the die and mounting of the lap spindle, the carriage 22 and the headstock are constructed for swinging movement about vertical axes. In operation, the pressure on the spindle 5 causes it to flex and press the lap into contact with the bore of the die. As the disc 7 rotates, the point of application of the lap advances circumferentially. Adjustment of the carriage 22 along the guide rods varies the angle at which pressure is applied by the lap, an adjustable locating stop 25 being provided.
