Class 83 (3) A lathe according to the parent Specification with a cylindrical bed extending about the spindle axis is modified by the provision of carriage guideways inclined downwardly towards the rear of the machine, tailstock being supported on the front and back of the cylindrical part of the bed. The bed 5, Fig. 1, extends approximately for 120 degrees around the spindle axis and the tailstock 10 is supported on guide surfaces at the base and rear including T-slots 13, 14. Clamping is effected in these slots by strips such as 44, Fig. 2, tightened by bolts 43 and spring discs 46. The spring pressure is released during adjustment by operating a handwheel 15 which moves a piston 40 and transmits pressure through a ,plastic semi-fluid synthetic medium to pistons 47 pressing on the .clamping bolts 43. Similar clamping and hydraulic releasing means are stated to be applicable to the carriage, crossslide and tool clamping means. The carriage 20, Fig. 1, is inclined downwardly towards the rear and carries a tool 22. Tailstocks.-The tailstock 10 is roughly adjusted by a motor 51, Fig. 1, driving, through worm gearing 50, Fig. 2, a screwed bush 29. The rough adjustment may be automatically halted when the centre 39 touches the work and fine adjustment effected through the handwheel 16. The latter comprises a piston operated by a screw 31 which transmits pressure to a larger piston 34 acting through spring discs on an end pad 36 of a bearing assembly carrying a " live " centre 39. In an alternative arrangement with an entirely hand drive a ratchet may be incorporated by which the rough adjustment becomes inoperative when the centre engages the work and further movement of the handwheel operates the hydraulic clamping arrangement similar to the above.
