Abstract
823,845. Lathe details. ARNFIELD Ltd., J. & E. Jan. 11, 1957 [Oct. 11, 1955], No. 28991/55. Class 83 (3). A tailstock for a lathe &c. is of the type provided with spring means for taking up the expansion that occurs in a workpiece when being machined. The centre 3 is carried in a non-rotatable sleeve 2 fed by a rotatable spindle 4 screw threaded at 5 where it connects with the sleeve. A compression spring 12 is interposed between a collar 11 on the spindle and the inside of the housing. When the centre is fed forward by rotation of the spindle and meets the resistance of the work, spring 12 is compressed as the spindle is forced back, and a trip 13 secured to the spindle operates a switch 14 which stops the motor (not shown) driving the worm 7. The trip 13 engages a projection 15 on the switch mounting if the spring 12 fractures, and thus prevents the work being completely released. Drive 7 is reversed for retraction of the centre, and the motor is stopped by a finger 8 on the sleeve engaging a switch 10. Forward movement of the sleeve is halted when there is no work in the machine, by the finger 8 and switch 9. An electrical interlock may be provided so that the tailstock cannot be released while the machine is running and a workpiece is held by the tailstock.
