687,334. Combined boring, turning, milling, and planing machines; boring and turning mills. BERTHIEZ, C. W. Dec. 7, 1949 [Dec. 14, 1948], No. 24108/51. Divided out of 687,278. Class 83 (iii). In a milling and boring machine comprising a milling and boring headstock 9 slidable vertically on an upright 6 which is slidable horizontally on a bed 4, an arm 27 is provided which is slidable vertically on two adjacent faces of the upright and on which a turning head 26 is slidable horizontally, the workpiece being supported on a motor-driven rotary table 23. The turning head comprises a tool-carrying ram 11 which can be fed vertically. For machining large workpieces, an annular table 24 is provided which may be integral with or secured to the table 23 or may be driven independently. The headstock may be slidable horizontally in a slide 8 as described in Specification 661,880 which is referred to. The arm 27 may be moved vertically by means of the screw device 17 used for moving the slide 8, clutch means being provided for passing from one drive to the other. The turning head is moved horizontally by means of a motor-driven screw 30. The bed 4 is slidable on a bed-plate 1. By adding an assembly consisting of a planing-machine bed and a table fitted on to the bed-plate, an openside planing machine can be obtained. Specification 661,879 also is referred to.
