Abstract

663,102. Tapping &c. attachments. MOTOR CAR WORKS NATIONAL CORPORATION, and HUDIK, J. April 1, 1949 [April 1, 1948], No. 8982/49. Class 83 (iii). In a chuck for holding screwcutting tools, more particularly for use on multiple - spindle machine-tools, of the kind in which the outer chuck body 4 is spring - cushioned axially with respect to the spindle 1, which may be either the machine spindle or an attachment thereto, and a friction coupling is interposed between the spindle and the chuck body, the axial spring- cushioning is effected in both directions by means of a helical spring 15 which is interposed between the flanges of a two-piece bush 7, 8 which are clamped in their middle, or rest, position on the spindle and inside the chuck body. The axial feed motion of the chuck body with respect to the spindle 1 away from the mid-position is confined in both directions by the two parts of the two-piece bush fitting against one another. The friction coupling is in the form of a disc clutch, the outer discs 12 engaging grooves in the chuck body and the inner discs 11 engaging grooves in the spindle so as to permit relative axial movement of the chuck body and spindle. The clutch discs are pressed against each other by a helical spring 10, the tension of which is adjustable by means of a nut 9.
