Abstract
575,112. Lathes. MURAD, W. H. Feb. 28, 1944, No. 3681. [Class 83 (iii)] When working on material of an abrasive nature the entry of foreign matter into the hollow spindle of a machine tool and into the surrounding part in which the spindle bears, is prevented by means of compressed air supplied to the interior of the spindle and surrounding part and allowed to flow out in directions such as to blow away comminuted material which might approach their bearing surfaces. A hollow lathe spindle 1 is mounted by means of bearings 7 within the tubular part 2a of a headstock 2 and contains a split collet 3 operated by a screwed shaft 6 in threaded engagement with an internally threaded plunger 4 at the rear end of the collet. The space between the spindle and the tubular member 2a is sealed by members 2b, 2c. Compressed air is supplied by way of a radial bore 9 and an annular groove 8 in the member 2c, radial passages 10 in the spindle and longitudinal passages 11 in the plug 4 and issues around the work to carry away the abrasive particles. Air also leaks into the space between the spindle and member 2a and out between the spindle and sealing members and so prevents entry of dust into the bearings 7.
