Abstract

587,871. Chucks. GRAVELL. G. W. Jan. 24, 1945, No. 1966. [Class 83 (iii)] A bevel-closing chuck has a split collet closed by cam-actuated balls or pins so mounted that the tool or work can be removed or the collet removed without stopping the machine. The body 1 is provided with a stem 3 for attachment to the machine spindle and is bored throughout and further counterbored to accommodate a split collet 4. Four radial holes are provided in the counterbore to suit balls 8 which coact with conical faces in an annular recess 7 on the collet and in a surrounding member 11 freely mounted at the end of the collet housing, the recess in the member 11 being sufficient to allow the balls to be displaced for removal of the socket. The member 11 bears against a thrust-bearing housed in a ring 15, screwing on a ring 16 and carrying a thrust-bearing abutting a flange 2 on the body. The collet is counterbored to provide resilience and is slotted to engage a peg 10 for alignment purposes, the opposite end being formed with a conical face engaging a chamfered face on the counterbore of the body. Forward movement of the member 11 pushes the balls inwards, forcing the collet into the counterbore ; the balls may be replaced by ball-headed pins.
