Abstract
770,207. Chucks and sockets. McGREGOR J. July 14, 1955 [July 24, 1954], No. 21682/54. Class 83 (3). A chuck, particularly for milling-machines, comprises a counter-sunk socket 12 with a polygonal recess at its inner end to receive the polygonal projection 11 on the unsplit end of a collet 9, one conical surface 18 of the head 17 of which engages the countersunk end of the socket, a nut 21 engaging screw-threads on the socket and having a conical surface engaging the other conical surface 19 on the head 17, and screw-threads 7 in either end of the bore of the collet to engage screw-threads at a corresponding end of the shank of the tool 6. The end of the tool-shank 5 is centred in the socket 12 by a centre point (not shown), or a ball 23 positioned in a passage 25 in the shank of the chuck by a spring washer 24. A cylindrical guide-surface 27 may be provided in the nut 21 in advance of, or behind, the threads in the nut or in both places. An end guide surface 30, Fig. 4, co-operating with a projection 29 on the collet, may replace or assist the guide surface or surfaces 27.
