Abstract

540,663. Chucks. WOOD, R. Sept. 24, 1940, No. 14517. [Class 83 (iii)] A chuck of the slidable split collet type for a capstan lathe is provided with an axially immovable work gripping part which is contracted by the slidable collet. The work gripping part comprises a removable split liner 6 having a flange 7 held between the end of the spindle 1 and the screw cap 5. An internal shoulder 10, preferably serrated, engages the work and an external shoulder 8 engages the shoulder 9 on the collet 2. The taper 3 of the collet may be arranged as shown so that the lever is contracted on operating the chuck actuating means so as to move the collet to the left but the taper may be reversed and coact with a tapered hole in the cap instead of with the tapered nose 4 of the spindle.
