Abstract

445,075. Chucks. FAIRWEATHER, H. G. C., 65, Chancery Lane, London.- (National Acme Co. ; 131st Street, Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A.) July 6, 1935, No. 19372. [Class 83 (iii)] In a draw-spindle chuck, the levers 10 for operating the draw-spindle 21 are moved inwards for gripping by cams 4 and are moved outwards for releasing the chuck by centrifugal action during rotation of the spindle 20. The levers 10 are pivoted by pins 11 in slots 9 in a body 2 screwed at 17 to the lathe &c. spindle 20 and locked by screws 19, Fig. 7. The ends 13 of the levers 10 engage a plate 14 slidable on a bush 14<1> projecting from the body 2 and abutting against a collar 22 secured to the draw-spindle 21. The plate 14 is slotted at 15, Fig. 6, to engage the recessed end 16, Fig. 7, of the body 2 in order to guide the plate on the body during its sliding movements, the side walls 151 of the slot 15 engaging the ends of the pivot pins 11 to retain them in place. Dowels 23 prevent relative rotation between the plate 14 and the collar 22. The cams 4 are slidable in slots 3 in the body 2 and are recessed at 6 to receive an actuating sleeve 7 operated by a yoke at 8. The cams engage grooves 71 in the sleeve to cause it to rotate with the body 2, and an extension 12 of the sleeve protects the levers 10. The work is gripped by a spring collet on the end of the draw-spindle 21.
