Abstract
813,046. Lathe details. BYDGOSKA FABRYKA MASZYN PRZEDSIEBIORSTWO PANSTWOWE. July 5, 1955 [July 5,1954], No. 19428/55. Class 83 (3). A work-steady for an automatic lathe having a slidable headstock, comprises an axially movable sleeve 9, Fig. 2, and a self-adjusting collet 10 for supporting bar-stock 11 during machining. A coupling device 6, 16 rotatably connects the sleeve to the lathe spindle, and a thrust collar 17 imparts axial movement to the sleeve so that the collet, through interengaging conical surfaces on the collet and sleeve, has a positive gripping action on the stock during retracting movement of the headstock. The headstock 2, Fig. 1, moves forwardly with the stock held by the main chuck 3 to effect machining, tools (not shown) being carried by the stationary support 4 which also houses the work-steady 5. The chuck 3 is provided with a driving member 7 for rotating the sleeve 9 of the steady through the coupling 6 and sliding rods 16. When a completed workpiece is to be severed, a lever 8, Fig. 1, is operated by a cam on the control shaft so that collar 17 is moved to move the sleeve 9 and close the collet, so that it positively grips the stock and drives it. The main chuck opens during this part of the cycle, and the headstock is retracted for the start of a fresh cycle of operations. The sleeve 9 is then released, and a spring 13 then lightly presses the collet against the work for a supporting action only.
