Abstract

633,422. Lathes; chucks. JONES & LAMSON MACHINE CO. Dec. 2, 1946, No. 35666. Convention date, Jan. 24. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iii)] [Also in Group XXX] Apparatus for machining workpieces, e.g. ball-bearing races, comprises two automatic lathes each having a chuck 65 mounted in a headstock spindle 170, a supply hopper 116 adjacent to the first lathe, means for automatically transferring successive work-pieces from the chuck of the first lathe to the chuck of the second lathe, the work-pieces being reversed by being passed through a twisted shoot 120 extending from the delivery hopper 118 of the first lathe to the supply hopper 122 of the second lathe. In each lathe, a carrier head 96 having gripping fingers transfers a work-piece from the supply hopper 116 to the chuck and another carrier head 78 simultaneously transfers a partly-tooled work-piece from the chuck to the deliver hopper 118. Each lathe comprises a rockable tool bar 36, an axially-movable rockable tool bar 34 and a pusher head 140 which is rockable with the bar 36 into and out of line with the chuck and movable axially by the bar 34 to push a work-piece into the chuck. After being tooled, the work-piece is released from the chuck by means of an ejector rod 64, Fig. 15, acting in conjunction with a rod 180 and ejector pins 192. The tool bars 34, 36, carrier heads 78, 96 and ejectorrod 64 are cam-operated. In a modification, the chuck grips the work-piece externally. In another modification, the fingers of the carrier head have rollers thereon to lessen the frictional grip on the work-piece. In a further modification, Fig. 24, the ejector rod 272 is retracted by means of a movable housing 284 and spring washers 290, the arrangement being such that when the spring washers have been flattened to the required extent, an auxiliary switch 306 is closed by means of a bell-crank 300 so that the spindle 170 can be rotated by an electric motor. The ejector rod has connections 274, 278 for the supply of air and coolant to the chuck. Making ball-bearing races.-A ball-bearing race is transferred from the supply hopper 116 of an automatic lathe to a chuck 65 where it is operated on by facing and grooving tools, the race then being released and transferred to a delivery hopper 118 from which it is conveyed to the supply hopper of a second lathe by means of a twisted shoot 120 which reverses the race, the tools of the second lathe operating to face, groove and chamfer the race.
