Abstract
631,385. Lathes; chucks. JONES & LAMSON MACHINE CO. Dec. 2, 1946, No. 35665. Convention date, Jan. 19. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iii)] [Also in Group XXX] In an automatic lathe, a driving connection is formed between the headstock spindle 20 and a workpiece, e.g. a motor armature 70 or the like, by means of spring - pressed clutch pawls 202 having chamfered lugs 208 which are adapted to engage a splined portion 76 of one, 74, of the armature shaft extensions 72, 74. The latter are adapted to be gripped by bevel-closing collets 170, 196 provided in an axially-movable tailstock ram 22 and in the spindle 20 respectively. A carrier head 56, Fig. 2, provided with gripping jaws 60 transfers an armature from the supply station 52 to a loading station in which it is in alignment with the chucks, and a second carrier head 58 simultaneously transfers another armature from the loading station to a delivery station 54. The armature is pushed from the loading station into engagement with the chucks by the ram 22. After tooling, the ram 22 is retracted and the armature released by an ejector rod 190. The ram 22, carrier heads 56, 58 and ejector rod 190 are operated by means of cams on drums. Making dynamo-electric machines.-A motor armature is transferred from the supply station of an automatic lathe to a loading station where it is chucked and tooled, the tooled armature being released and transferred to a delivery station.
