1442597 Workpiece transferring in multispindle lathes WICKMAN MACHINE TOOL SALES Ltd 2 July 1973 [13 July 1972] 32712/72 Headings B3B and B3T In an automatic multi-spindle lathe having an indexable work spindle drum, workpiece loading and unloading apparatus is provided to supply and remove workpieces in a predetermined sequence from the chucks on the workspindles in relation to the indexing of the spindle drum the apparatus comprising a shaft 15 mounted on the lathe on arm 15 secured to the shaft and pivotable and axially displaceable therewith one or more members 17 angularly pivotable on the arm about an axis or axes parallel to the shaft axis each member having a chuck for gripping or releasing a workpiece carried in a work spindle or spindles and drive means for actuating the shaft and the members to effect their sequential pivoting to supply and remove workpieces from the lathe. The axial and pivotal action of the shaft 15 with the arm 16 is effected from cam drums 49, 51 respectively by way of levers 53 and 68. The lever 68 is connected by a link 71 to a crank on a shaft 63 which is connected by a gear 74, 73 with the shaft 15 through which the pivoting action of the shaft 15 and arm 16 is effected. The pivoting action of the chuck carrying member 17 is carried out in unison with pivoting action of the arm 16 and is effected by a chain and sprocket connection between the shaft 15 and the respective members (37, 38, 39, 41) Fig. 10 (not shown). In the various embodiments described the arm 16 may be a single or double arm member having one, two or four work transferring members with appropriate chucks thereon whereby one or more workpieces can be transferred to or from the work station depending on the operational sequence of the lathe.
