Abstract

902,069. Chucks; machine-tool details. NEW BRITAIN MACHINE CO. Jan. 3, 1961 [April 27, 1960], No. 200/61. Class 83 (3). A machine tool having tool and work-carrying members C, D, E, movable lengthwise of the axis of a rotary tool comprises means for stopping the tool in a particular angular position and for depositing it in a rack K under punched or magnetic tape control. The machine includes a reversible electric motor in the base for rotating and feeding the spindle 17, a reversible rapid-traverse motor for the spindle mounted on the spindle head C and separate multi-speed reversible motors for the feed movements of the spindle head C, the saddle D and the table E, all controlled from a pendant G or a tape-control unit H. The tapecontrol causes the tool spindle to be moved successively to pick-up and replace the tools in the rack K and to machine a workpiece W, the machine being stopped with no tools in the spindle. To stop the spindle in the correct angular position to ensure that a key 18, Fig. 2, thereon engages a recess in the tool, a collar 21 on the spindle has a V-groove 22 engageable by a roller 24 on a fluid-operated plunger 26. The plunger is operated by a solenoid controlled by magnet-type proximity switches 40, 42, 41, 43 which also control the stopping of the spindle motor. When the roller 24 is correctly positioned in the groove 22, an arm 50 on the plunger 26 operates a switch to illuminate a visual indicator. The spindle is held in position by a brake N on a drive-shaft 60. The tools are retained in the rack K by spring-pressed detents engaging the tool-shanks. The front portion 71 of the magazine is movable resiliently relatively to the rear fixed portion 70. If the front portion is moved while tools are being picked up or deposited, switches are closed to stop the machine. The draw-bar mechanism for clamping and unclamping each tool is as described in Specification 852,459.
