Abstract

437,388. Sockets. GUYLEE, F., Marvel Chuck Works, Snowden Street, Bradford, Yorkshire. May 7, 1934, No. 13683. [Class 83 (iii)] A tool-holding socket 4 is held in a shank 2b to be mounted in a machine spindle by means of detents 5 engaging beneath a collar 11 on the socket and slidable in radial slots in the shank. Inclined surfaces e, 5<a> on the detents coact with similar surfaces on rings 6, 7, screwed together at 7<a> and slidable axially on the shank. When the socket containing a tool is inserted into the shank, which may be stationary or rotating, by means of a collar 9 rotatably secured thereto by a spring ring 10, a bevelled surface c on the collar 11 engages the bevelled inner ends of the detents 5 and forces them outwards until the socket is fully inserted, whereupon the detents engage a bevelled surface d on the collar to force the socket axially upwards. A spring 8 normally maintains the rings 6, 7 in the lowermost position and the socket is driven by a tang end 4<a> thereon engaging a transverse slot 5<w> in the shank. The socket may be removed whilst the shank is rotating by raising the rings 6, 7 by hand and thus withdrawing the detents.
