Abstract

411,899. Chucks. CONE, F. L., 129, State Street, Windsor, Vermont, U.S.A. Dec. 14, 1932, No. 35478. [Class 83 (iii).] Work-holding and feeding means for use with automatic multiple spindle lathes and like machines comprises a hollow work spindle, a collet and co-operating hood and an element movable in one direction to force the collet and hood into workgripping engagement, the reverse movement of the element operating positive means to permit the collet to release the work. The collet sleeve 32 passes through the hollow spindle 35, rotated by gears 75, 76, and terminates in a collar 39 which abuts the sleeve 40 carrying the collet-operating arms 42. Movement to the left of a cam-faced collar 45, operated by a yoke 56, rotates the arms 42, which engage the wear-piece 49 on the end of the spindle, and the sleeve 40 is displaced to the left thus closing the collet. Movement of the collar 45 to the right results in the arms 42 being released and further the coming into operation of the lost-motion bolts 50 the heads of which finally engage the base of the sockets 52 and positively draw to the right the sleeve 40, thus permitting release of the work. The reciprocating gripper 31 for feeding the stock passes inside the collet sleeve and is actuated at the head 65 by means not shown.
