Abstract

827,169. Chucks; milling-cutters. MAJOR, R. H. Dec. 30, 1955 [Dec. 21, 1954], No. 36943/54. Class 83 (3). A collet-chuck for a milling-cutter, slotting-drill, &c. comprises a collet 15 engaging screw-threads 33 on the cutter 18, and retained in a bore 2 in the end of the chuck by a sleeve 5 which engages screwthreads in the bore and centres the collet through inter-engaging conical surfaces 14, 17. Inter-engaging conical surfaces 8, 9 are also provided in the bore 2 and on the head 7 of the sleeve 5, which may be formed with splits 11. In operation, the split-collet and sleeve are inserted in the bore, with one or more driving-projections 27 on the end of the collet inserted in recesses 28, and the sleeve tightened, as by a spanner engaging flats 31 on the sleeve and the end of the chuck, or a bar engaging sockets in these parts. The cutter is then threaded into the collet and centred on the conical head 24 of a pin 25, further rotation of the cutter displacing the collet axially and closing it on the cutter through the action of the surfaces 14, 17.
