Abstract

565,164. Chucks. ATKINSON, J. June 22, 1943, No. 10028. [Class 83 (iii)] Parallel shank drills, milling- cutters, &c. are held without rotational or axial slip in collets that are self-tightening in the chuck body. The chuck body is tapped at 15 and tapered at 10, or is otherwise formed, for attachment to the machine spindle. It is tapped at 18 and tapered at 23 for the reception of a two part collet 11a, 11b having one or more keys 12 sunk in recesses in one or both parts. The keys engage recesses 30, 31 in the tool shanks providing for axial adjustment of the cutter in the chuck. The hand of the thread 18 is such that any slip of the collet in the chuck causes a further tightening. The keys may be replaced by radial pins, and the collet may be in three or more parts. To facilitate the assembly of the collet sections, these may have dowels. A notched flange 16 provides for fixing and removing the chuck from the spindle and a hexagonal section 24 on the collet provides for initial spanner tightening. In a modification, the collet is clamped on the chuck by means of a screw cap. The chuck body is bored out to provide clearance for a double-ended tool 33. The collet may be connected to the chuck by axially located keys.
