Abstract

570,098. Drills. HOPEWELL, J. G. Dec. 13, 1943, No. 20807. [Class 83 (iii)] In a centre drill a sleeve A, Fig. 1, split at F, is formed with a tapered thread G and with an end B provided with countersink cutting edges C. The sleeve is hollow to pass a twist drill E clamped in the sleeve by a nut H. In a modification the sleeve is closed on to the drill by a collar J, Fig. 6, and set screw K. The collar may form a depth gauge and may have a relatively rotatable part that becomes stationary on contact with the work. The collar may be split and provided with a contracting screw. The sleeve may have flat extensions D on which the cutting-edge for the countersink is formed. An additional sleeve may be provided, between the sleeve A and the collar, formed with tabs turned down into grooves in the sleeve A to close the flutes of the twist drill and prevent cuttings from jamming the drill in the sleeve.
